When I started planning a new build I was very keen to ensure that the impact upon the environment was minimal. Having worked in a building with a partial green roof I was aware of the insulation benefits and I really like the appearance, so I approached Sam Dossett to design and build our roof. I was a little nervous of using a process that was completely new to me and my build team, but working with Sam was a joy from start to finish; he made sure that I understood each step of the process and he worked closely with the architect and engineer to ensure that everything came together smoothly. I wanted to be involved in the development of the design and Sam chose plants which fitted with the colour scheme and made sure that the stone used for the gully was as close as possible to the tones of our local beach shingle.

The overall build project has been challenging but the one constant reliable element was the green roof and I am delighted with the finished structure. The plants have grown surprisingly quickly, despite the lack of rain in the early part of the summer, in fact I have only had to water it once. It is my pride and joy and regardless of the fact that you have to walk through our bedroom to access it, I show it to everyone who comes to the house.
